Advantages of Going Outside

Autumn marks the end of summer and the beginning of a colder season. It is also the best time for you to get out and breath the fresh air and bask in the warm sun. You can make the experience a little more fun by either going out for a run, hiking, or take your family out for a walk. You could also dedicate the 30th of September to go out with other people to mark the National GetOutside Day. Here are some of the reasons to go outside this autumn.

1. It’s Good for Your Mental Health

Going out for a walk, or participating in outdoor activities, for at least 90 minutes every day promotes your mental well being by reducing chances of sliding into depression. According to a study conducted at Stanford University, adults who go for a nature walk show decreased activity in the regions associated with stress and depression. Another study in another University in Japan also reveals that humans flourish and are happiest when they indulge in nature activities. This has been confirmed by those that take part in Shinrin-Yoku, also known as Forest Bathing.

2. It Sharpens Your Focus

Exposing yourself to nature, such as taking a nature walk can help improve your problem-solving capacity and focus. This can be seen with individuals who take a break from work to go outdoors, even for a few minutes. Simply breathing the fresh air, watching birds, and even walking under the sun is enough to revitalise your mind. This thus makes it easier to concentrate in class, work, or when you need to work on an attention-demanding task. Spending at least 20 minutes in nature is enough to boost your cognitive function and attention significantly.

3. Promotes Vitamin D Production

Our bodies need sunshine to be able to manufacture Vitamin D. Vitamin D is one of the essential vitamins required for the healthy development of bones, skin, and muscle tissue. Vitamin D deficiency leads to a condition known as scurvy. This vitamin also comes in handy in promoting cardiovascular and lung health. That said, it would be wise to get as much sunshine as possible before winter comes creeping in.

4. Physical Health

The fact that you will be going outside means more physical activity and exercise. Whether taking a walk, walking your dog, or going for a hike, the amount of physical exercise involved is enough to keep you fit for the day. According to research, going outside and indulging in various physical activities is far more beneficial than going to the gym. Quit the gym for the time being and try to interact with nature for even more benefits; if you have the money, why not try a Wild Wood Adventure for additional excitement?

5. Breathing

The air outside (in parks and other natural settings) is calmer and more vibrant than in the house. Although your AC may do an excellent job purifying the air, the indoor air quality doesn’t come any close to air outside in parks and forests. This is because trees remove pollutants that the AC wouldn’t be able to. In addition to this, plants release tons of oxygen thus making breathing easier for you. Should you wake up feeling tired and fatigued, simply stepping outside will help rejuvenate and re-energise your cells. Go out instead of taking your regular morning coffee.

These are just but a few of the many benefits you’ll get from going outside. Make every minute count this autumn, go out with your family or friends and get to appreciate what nature has to offer. You will be surprised how healthy this can be. Spending a bit of your time outdoors is not only good for your mental health but also promotes overall wellbeing. Pick a date and go hiking in one of Great Britain’s mountains in the company of friends and even family. Be sure to pack a waterproof jacket when you head out.
